Resume Summary Examples for Freshers & Experienced (18 Samples)

A four-part formula and 18 resume summary examples for B.Tech, BCA, B.Com, MBA and experienced roles, plus a two-minute tailoring routine.

Top of a resume with a three-line professional summary highlighted

A resume summary is two to four lines at the top of your resume that say who you are professionally, your strongest skills for this job, one result that proves them, and the role you want. Freshers lead with their degree and best project; experienced candidates lead with role, years and a measurable achievement. Rewrite it for each application using the job description's own terms.

Below is a simple formula, the difference between a summary and an objective, 18 examples for freshers and experienced candidates in Indian job markets, and the lines that make recruiters skip ahead. If you'd like help drafting one, the AI resume builder can write a summary from your own resume and tailor it to a job description, and you approve every change before it goes in.

The resume summary formula

Cornell's career office describes the summary as "essentially an elevator pitch on your resume" and gives a clear limit: "Limit your summary to four sentences maximum. The shorter the better." It suggests covering your background, your skills and qualifications, and their relevance to the position. In practice that becomes four parts:

PartFreshersExperiencedExample phrase
1. Who you areDegree, branch, yearRole and years of experience"Backend developer with 4 years of experience…"
2. Core skills2–4 skills from the job post2–4 skills from the job post"…in Java, Spring Boot and AWS…"
3. ProofBest project or internship resultBiggest measurable achievement"…cut checkout API latency by 40%…"
4. TargetThe role you're applying forThe role or problem you want next"…looking for senior backend roles in fintech."

Write it in short phrases or sentences without "I", the same way you write your bullet points, and keep it to three lines on the page if you can. The proof part matters most. Harvard's resume guide asks for bullets that are "fact-based (quantify and qualify)", and the same standard makes a summary believable.

Summary or objective: which one to use?

SummaryObjective
FocusWhat you offer the employerWhat you want from the employer
Typical line"Data analyst with 2 years in SQL and Power BI; built dashboards used daily by a 40-person sales team.""Seeking a challenging role in a reputed organisation where I can grow."
Works forEveryone, including freshers with good projectsRarely useful; at most a career switcher naming a new target role

The classic objective adds little because so many resumes use almost the same words. A fresher summary with a project result says much more in the same space.

Lines that make recruiters skip your summary

AvoidWhyWrite instead
"Hardworking, sincere and dedicated professional"Unprovable and on thousands of resumesOne result that shows the quality
"Seeking a challenging role in a reputed organisation"About you, not the employerThe specific role you want
Long paragraphs of 6–8 linesThey get skimmed or skipped in a quick scanThree lines, four sentences at most
A list of 15 toolsThat belongs in the Skills sectionThe 2–4 tools the job asks for most
The same summary for every jobMisses the job's keywordsSwap skills and target role for each post
Numbers you can't explainFalls apart in the interviewOnly figures you measured or can estimate honestly

Tailor your summary in two minutes

Cornell's advice is to read the job description and tailor your summary to fit the job. A quick way to do that:

  1. Underline the job title and the three skills the post repeats most.
  2. Change your target role to match the job title.
  3. Swap your listed skills for those three, keeping only ones you really have.
  4. Pick the proof point closest to the job's main responsibility.
  5. Read it aloud. If it takes more than 15 seconds, cut a phrase.

The same words should then appear in your Naukri headline and profile summary; our Naukri resume tips explain why that helps in recruiter searches. And to make sure the summary and the rest of the page parse correctly, follow the ATS-friendly resume format.
