An ATS-friendly resume format is a single-column, reverse-chronological layout with standard headings (Summary, Experience, Education, Skills, Projects), contact details in the main body, plain text instead of tables, text boxes or graphics, spelled-out job titles, and one date format throughout. Save it as a text-based PDF or DOCX under 2.5MB, named after you. That combination parses cleanly on Naukri and on company career portals.

Why the format matters more than the design
Most large employers collect applications in an applicant tracking system (ATS). Jobscan's 2026 analysis found a detectable ATS at 97.4% of Fortune 500 companies, with Workday used by over 40% of them and SuccessFactors by about 12%. So if you apply on a large company's career site from India, you are almost certainly going through one of these systems.
When you upload a resume, the ATS parses it: it pulls your name, contact details, job titles, dates, education and skills into separate fields. Recruiters then search and filter those fields. If the parser misreads your layout, your email can end up empty or your skills can land in the wrong place, and a recruiter searching for "Spring Boot" or "Power BI" may never see you. A resume made in a graphic design tool can look polished and still parse badly.
Greenhouse, one of the major ATS vendors, publishes the reasons its own parser fails. Its support documentation lists files over 2.5MB, graphics, photos or word art, files uploaded as images, tables, headers and footers, name and contact information in a header, footer or text box, columned layouts, inconsistent section formatting, spacing between letters, abbreviated job titles such as "Sr. Account Exec", and placeholder data like "First Last" or "Company 1". India-specific details to get right
A few things are particular to Indian resumes and portals.
- Company names: write the full name with its suffix, such as "Pvt. Ltd." or "Ltd.". Greenhouse lists company names without standard identifiers among its formatting issues, and the full name is also what recruiters verify in background checks.
- Designations: service companies use internal grades ("Systems Engineer", "Associate L1"). Write the designation on your offer letter, and add a plain description in the first bullet if the title is unusual.
- Notice period and CTC: Naukri and most company forms ask for these in separate fields. They don't need to be on the resume. If you are serving notice, a short line in the summary ("Available from 15 Jan 2027") is enough.
- Numbers: lakh and crore are fine for Indian recruiters ("2 lakh requests a day"). For global employers, write "200,000".

PDF or Word for ATS?
Both work when the file is text-based. Greenhouse names .docx and .pdf as proper resume formats; the problem is a PDF that is really an image, such as a scan or a photo-heavy export from a design tool. To check, open your PDF and try selecting a line of text with your mouse. If you can't select it, a parser can't read it either. Send Word only when the portal or recruiter asks for it, and keep the same content in both versions.
