Resume Format for Freshers (India 2026): Layout, Sample & Tips

The one-page fresher resume format for India: section order, a complete sample, project bullets, degree-wise variations and common mistakes.

Published October 5, 2026
One-page fresher resume with education, skills and projects sections

The best resume format for freshers in India is a one-page, single-column, reverse-chronological resume in this order: contact details, a two-line summary, education, skills, projects, internships, certifications and achievements. Use standard headings, real text (no skill bars or images), one font, and save it as a PDF named after you. That layout reads well for a recruiter and parses cleanly in applicant tracking software.

Below you will find the exact section order, a full sample layout, how to write projects when you have no work experience, variations for B.Tech, BCA, B.Com and MBA freshers, and the mistakes that get fresher resumes skipped. If you want to fill it in quickly, the AI resume builder has 40 ATS-friendly templates and checks your score before you download.

Section order for a fresher resume

Lead with your strongest proof. For most freshers that is education and projects, because there is little or no work history yet. Harvard's career guide gives the same rule in general form: list headings in order of importance, and within each heading put the most recent item first.

OrderSectionWhat goes in itLength
1Contact detailsName, phone, email, city, LinkedIn, GitHub or portfolio if relevant2 lines
2SummaryDegree, target role, two strongest skills, one proof point2–3 lines
3EducationDegree, college, CGPA or percentage, year; Class 12 and 10 only if the employer asks or scores are strong3–4 lines
4SkillsGrouped: languages, frameworks, tools, databases; only what you can discuss in an interview3–4 lines
5Projects2–3 projects, each with what you built, how, and a result8–10 lines
6Internships / trainingCompany, role, dates, 2 bullets each4–6 lines
7CertificationsName, issuer, year (NPTEL, AWS, Google, Coursera)2–3 lines
8Achievements & activitiesHackathons, coding ranks, college roles, sports, volunteering2–3 lines

If you have a strong internship that matches the job, move Internships above Projects. If you have none, leave the section out rather than writing "NA".

How to write projects when you have no experience

Projects are the fresher's experience section, so write them like work. Each bullet should start with an action verb, say what you did, and end with a result. Harvard's guide calls this being "fact-based (quantify and qualify)". A number is best, but a concrete outcome works too: deployed, adopted by a society, selected for a showcase.

Weak (duty)Strong (action + result)
Made a library management system.Built a library management system in Java and MySQL that tracks 2,000 books; replaced the department's paper register.
Worked on machine learning project.Trained a crop-disease classifier on 4,000 leaf images; reached 91% validation accuracy and presented it at the college tech fest.
Did internship at a company.Automated a weekly Excel report with Python, saving the sales team about 3 hours a week.
Good knowledge of HTML, CSS.Designed and deployed a responsive event site for the college fest, used by 1,500 visitors in two weeks.

Never invent a number. If you do not know the exact figure, describe the outcome in words, and be ready to explain how you measured anything you do claim.

Formatting rules that keep the resume readable by software

  • One column. Two-column designs often get read in the wrong order by applicant tracking systems.
  • Standard headings. "Education", "Skills", "Projects", "Experience". Avoid creative labels.
  • Real text only. No skill bars, star ratings or text inside images.
  • Contact details in the body, not only in the page header or footer.
  • One font, 10–12 pt, consistent bold and spacing. Harvard's guide also stresses consistency and checking the PDF conversion.
  • PDF named after you, for example Priya_Sharma_Resume.pdf, unless the portal asks for Word.
  • One page. A fresher resume that runs to two pages usually has padding.

Mistakes that get fresher resumes skipped

  1. An "Objective" that says nothing ("seeking a challenging role in a reputed organisation").
  2. Personal details recruiters do not need: father's name, religion, marital status, full address, declaration with signature.
  3. A skills list with twenty tools you cannot answer questions about.
  4. Projects without your role ("we made…"), or without any result.
  5. Different dates or CGPA on the resume and the company application form.
  6. Spelling mistakes in your own name, college or email. Read it aloud once.

Check it before you send it

Run your finished resume through the free ATS resume checker. It scores the file out of 100 without sign-up, and a free account shows the exact lines to fix and compares it with a job description you paste. A fresher resume built on the layout above usually lands in the Strong band (71–85) after one round of fixes; our guide on what a good ATS score is explains the bands. Then use the same stories in your interviews: the campus placement preparation plan shows how.
