What Is a Good ATS Score? (Freshers & Experienced, India)
What a good ATS score is, realistic targets for freshers and experienced candidates in India, why checkers disagree, and how to raise yours fast.

On InterviewGPT's checker, a good ATS score is 71 or higher, and anything from 86 to 100 is very strong. Below 51, fix the flagged items before you apply. Remember that the score is a checker's estimate. Real applicant tracking systems such as Workday do not show you a number; recruiters search their database by keywords and filters, so clean parsing and the right keywords matter more than the number itself.
This guide explains what the score measures, what a realistic target is for freshers and experienced candidates in India, why two checkers give you two different numbers, and the fastest way to raise yours. You can test your resume in about eight seconds with the free ATS resume checker, no sign-up needed.
What does an ATS score actually measure?
An ATS score is a prediction of how well software can read your resume and match it to a job. Applicant tracking systems are the databases companies use to collect applications, and almost every large employer has one: Jobscan's 2026 report found a detectable ATS at 97.4% of Fortune 500 companies, with Workday used by over 40% of them and SuccessFactors by about 12%. Many Indian IT services firms, banks and startups use the same systems or Naukri's own recruiter tools.
None of those systems hands you a grade. The "score" comes from checker tools that simulate two things a real ATS does: parsing your file into fields (name, experience, education, skills) and comparing your text with a job description. A high score means your resume is likely to be read correctly and found in searches. It does not mean a recruiter will shortlist you.
InterviewGPT's score bands and what to do in each
The checker gives one score out of 100 without sign-up. A free account breaks it into five categories and adds an optional keyword match when you paste a job description. The bands are deliberately strict: the top band starts at 86 so that reaching it tells you something.
| Score | Band | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| 86–100 | Very strong | Parses cleanly, sections are clear, bullets show results, skills are searchable | Send it. Tailor keywords for each job. |
| 71–85 | Strong | Readable and complete, with a few weak bullets or missing keywords | Fix the top two or three flagged lines, then re-check |
| 51–70 | Good | Something is costing you: a layout the parser scrambles, duty-style bullets, or skills buried in paragraphs | Work through the flagged list before applying |
| Below 51 | Needs work | Often a two-column template, text inside images or tables, or missing sections | Rebuild on a single-column template, then re-check |
What is a good ATS score for freshers?
For a fresher, 71 or above is a realistic and good target, and 80+ is very achievable with one page and a clear structure. Freshers usually lose points in the same places: a thin experience section, a long list of generic skills ("MS Office, communication, teamwork") with no proof, and projects described as topics instead of outcomes. You do not need fake experience to score well. Put projects, internships and certifications in clearly labelled sections, write each bullet as action plus result, and list the technical skills the job actually asks for.
What is a good ATS score for experienced candidates?
With two or more years of experience, aim for 80 or higher before you apply, because you have more material to show impact. Experienced resumes tend to lose points for long, duty-style bullets ("Responsible for managing…"), missing numbers, two-page resumes padded with old roles, and skills that only appear inside paragraphs. If you are switching domains, the job-description match matters more than the overall score: map your past work to the new role's keywords honestly.
The five things the checker scores
| Category | What it checks | Fastest fix |
|---|---|---|
| ATS readability | Whether text comes out in the order you wrote it | Single column. No text boxes, headers or footers for key details. |
| Resume essentials | Contact details, experience, education and skills present and clearly labelled | Use standard headings such as "Experience" and "Education" |
| Experience & impact | Bullets that show outcomes rather than duties | Start with a verb, add a result or number you can defend |
| Writing & brevity | Scannable bullets, no filler, consistent tense | Cut bullets to one or two lines |
| Skills & keywords | Skills findable as text, not hidden in paragraphs | A separate Skills section using the job's exact terms |
Why do different checkers give different scores?
Every checker uses its own rules and weights, so a 78 on one tool and a 64 on another can describe the same resume. Some weight keyword overlap heavily, some penalise length, and some only check formatting. Compare scores within one tool, before and after your edits, rather than across tools. And do not chase 100. A resume stuffed with every keyword from the posting may score higher and read worse, and the person who reads it after the software will notice.
How Indian job portals use your resume
On Naukri, recruiters find candidates by searching resumes with keywords, and Naukri's own support documentation describes options to match "all the words", "any of the words" or an "exact phrase", plus filters such as years of experience. That has a practical consequence: if a recruiter searches "Spring Boot" and your resume says "Spring framework", you may not appear. Use the job's wording where it is true for you, keep your profile headline and key skills specific, and make sure your uploaded resume parses cleanly. Our guide to Naukri resume tips goes deeper.
Company career portals built on Workday, SuccessFactors or similar systems parse your file into form fields. If your dates or job titles land in the wrong boxes, the problem is usually layout, which is what the readability category catches.

- Rename creative headings ("My Journey") to standard ones ("Experience").
- Take contact details out of the header and footer and put them in the body.
- Rewrite your three weakest bullets as action, method, result.
- Build a Skills section with the exact tools named in the job description, only if you have used them.
- Paste the job description into the checker and add any missing keywords where they are true.
- Save as PDF with a clear file name, such as
Priya_Sharma_Resume.pdf, and re-check.

Quick answers
Is 70 a good ATS score?
It is in the "Good" band on InterviewGPT's checker: readable, but something specific is holding it back. Fix the flagged lines; most resumes at 70 reach the mid-70s or 80s with a few edits to layout and bullets.
Can a resume score 100?
Rarely, and it is not the goal. A score in the high 80s or 90s already means the resume parses cleanly and shows impact. Past that point, more keywords tend to hurt readability for the human reviewer.
Does a resume photo lower the ATS score?
Software cannot read text inside an image, and some templates place the photo in a column that disturbs reading order. If you include a photo, use a single-column template and keep every detail as real text. See whether to put a photo on your resume in India.
PDF or Word for ATS?
A text-based PDF from a single-column template parses well on most systems. Send Word only when the employer asks for it.
