Resume vs CV vs Biodata in India: Which One to Send

When Indian job posts ask for a CV they usually mean a resume. The differences, when to send each, and how to convert one into the other.

In India, when a company or job post asks for your "CV", it usually means a resume: a one- or two-page summary of your skills, experience and education for that job. A full academic CV, with every publication, conference and research role, is only needed for research, teaching, fellowship and PhD applications. A "biodata" is an older personal-details format that you shouldn't send for private-sector jobs.

This guide explains the three formats, when each one is right, and how to turn one into another. If you're applying to companies, the AI resume builder gives you ATS-friendly resume templates you can fill in and tailor to each job.

What universities say about the difference

Harvard's career office describes a resume as "a brief synopsis (one or two pages)", while for a CV "you have no suggested page limits to worry about". It adds that a CV "goes into more depth in each section, and even looks at teaching and research you've conducted, works you've published, and major presentations", and is usually used for "academic, research, scientific, or medical positions".

MIT's career office explains why Indian job posts mix up the terms: "In some international settings, the term 'CV' is used for all opportunities – however, you should tailor your document based on position type." MIT also notes that an academic CV is typically "2 to 4 pages for a younger professional, 4 to 7 pages for a person with more experience".

Which one should you send?

Why you shouldn't send a biodata for a job

A traditional biodata leads with date of birth, parents' names, religion, caste, marital status and a full address. None of that helps a recruiter decide whether you can do the job, and some of it invites bias. Harvard's resume guidance lists including age or gender among the things not to do. Keep your name, phone, email, city and LinkedIn, and put the space into projects and results. Our guide to photos and personal details on Indian resumes covers what to drop.

Turning a CV into a resume

  1. Pick the job and highlight what it asks for.
  2. Cut publications and conferences to the two or three most relevant, or a single line ("3 peer-reviewed papers in computer vision").
  3. Rewrite research work as results a company understands: what you built, the tools, the outcome.
  4. Add a skills section with the job's exact tool names.
  5. Trim to one page (fresher) or two (experienced), in a single-column layout.

Turning a resume into an academic CV

  1. Lead with education, including thesis title and advisor.
  2. Add research experience with your role, methods and outcomes.
  3. List publications, presentations and posters in a consistent citation style.
  4. Add teaching or TA work, awards, fellowships and grants.
  5. Don't worry about length; completeness matters more, as MIT puts it.
