What is an AI interview assistant?
An AI interview assistant is software that listens to your live job interview, transcribes both sides of the conversation and suggests answers in real time, based on your resume and the role. The best ones keep their window off the screen share and give short points you can glance at, not essays to read out.
Two very different things share this name
Search for “AI interview assistant” and you will find tools for job seekers and tools for recruiters. They solve opposite problems. This page is about the candidate side.
| Type | Used by | What it does | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Live interview assistant | Candidate | Listens during a real call and suggests answers in real time. | InterviewGPT, Final Round AI, LockedIn AI, Parakeet AI |
| Mock interview tool | Candidate | An AI plays the interviewer for practice and scores your answers afterwards. | Practice modes in many prep suites |
| General chatbot | Candidate | You type or paste a question and read a reply. Not built for live audio. | ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude |
| AI interviewer or screening tool | Employer | Runs or scores first-round interviews for a hiring team. | Recruiting platforms with AI screening |
| Interview note-taker | Employer | Records and summarises interviews for the hiring panel. | Meeting and recruiting note-takers |
How a live AI interview assistant works
01
Hear both sides
The app captures your computer’s audio, so it hears the interviewer and you, whether you use speakers or headphones. It works with any meeting app because it listens at the operating-system level.
02
Transcribe live
Speech becomes text within moments, so the assistant knows the exact question. InterviewGPT uses Deepgram for live transcription.
03
Add your context
Your resume, the role and your own instructions (tone, length, preferred language for code) shape the answer, so suggestions use your real projects instead of generic examples.
04
Suggest an answer
You get short, scannable points: a STAR outline for a behavioural question, an approach with complexity and edge cases for a coding problem, trade-offs for a design question.
05
Show it only to you
The answer appears in a window on your screen, or on your phone as a second view. On Windows, an app can ask the operating system to leave its window out of screen sharing and recordings.
The last step is what “invisible” means in practice. Windows 10 version 2004 and later let an app mark its window so that, in Microsoft's words, it “is displayed only on a monitor. Everywhere else, the window does not appear at all” ( Microsoft Learn). Read what interviewers can see when you share your screen for the details and a five-minute test.
What it helps with
Behavioural and HR rounds
Turn "tell me about a time…" into a situation, action and result from your own resume.
Coding and DSA
Read the problem from your screen and get an approach, complexity and edge cases to talk through.
System design
Structure requirements, components, scaling and trade-offs, then explain them in your own words.
Freshers and campus drives
Practise self introductions, HR questions and project explanations before placement season.
Video interviews on any app
Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, Webex and others, because the assistant listens at the system level.
Phone interviews
Use a laptop alongside a phone call and keep answers on screen.
AI interview assistant vs ChatGPT vs mock interview tools
| Live AI interview assistant | General chatbot | Mock interview tool | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hears the interviewer automatically | Yes, live audio and transcription | No, you type or paste | Plays the interviewer itself |
| Uses your resume and role | Yes, every answer | Only if you paste it each time | Often |
| Works during a real call | Yes | Awkward: switching windows and typing | No, practice only |
| Stays out of screen share | On supported Windows setups | No, a normal browser window | Not applicable |
| Best for | Live interviews where AI help is permitted | Preparing answers before the day | Rehearsal and feedback |

What it can't do
- It cannot hide your camera, your voice or a second device. Interviewers notice eyes that keep drifting and answers that sound read aloud.
- It does not know what you have not told it. Without your resume and role, answers are generic.
- It can be wrong. AI suggestions need a quick sanity check, especially numbers, dates and code.
- It does not replace preparation. You still need to understand your projects and fundamentals to handle follow-up questions.
- Screen-share privacy depends on your setup: Windows version, meeting app and what you share. Test privately first.
When is it allowed?
Rules differ by company, interview and country. Some employers are fine with AI for preparation; many online assessments and proctored tests forbid it outright. Use an AI interview assistant only where AI help is permitted, such as practice, mock interviews and conversations where it is allowed, and follow any instruction you are given.
InterviewGPT honours blocklist requests: an employer, university or assessment provider can email support@interviewgpt.in to have its hiring process covered. Read more on privacy and ethics and on where we stand.
How to choose one
- 1. Your computer. Check it runs on your operating system. InterviewGPT is Windows only; some others support macOS.
- 2. Audio in a real call. Run a private test with your headset and meeting app, and read the transcript.
- 3. Answers you can glance at. Time how long it takes to find the main point.
- 4. Your context. Load your resume and check that answers use your real projects.
- 5. Screen-share behaviour. Share your whole screen to a second device and look for the window.
- 6. Real cost. Convert credits and subscriptions into the hours you will actually use; see InterviewGPT pricing.

Questions people ask
What is an AI interview assistant?
An AI interview assistant is software that listens to a live job interview, transcribes the conversation and suggests answers in real time, using your resume and the role you are applying for. Some tools on the employer side also use the name, for AI that screens or interviews candidates.
How does an AI interview assistant work?
It captures the call audio, turns speech into text, adds your context (resume, role, instructions), asks a language model for a short structured answer and shows it in a private window or on your phone.
Is using an AI interview assistant allowed?
It depends on the company and the interview, and many proctored assessments forbid it. Use it only where AI help is permitted, and respect any instruction you are given. Employers can ask InterviewGPT to block its use in their hiring process.
Can the interviewer see the AI interview assistant?
Not on the shared screen if the app is excluded from capture by Windows and your setup supports it, or if you share a single window. They can still see your face and hear your voice, so natural delivery matters. Run a private test call first.
Is there a free AI interview assistant?
Several tools have free allowances. InterviewGPT offers free 10-minute live sessions, up to 3 a day, plus a free Invisible Browser. Unlimited free live help does not exist because real-time transcription and AI cost money to run.
AI interview assistant or ChatGPT: which is better for interviews?
ChatGPT is useful for preparing answers in advance. During a live call, a dedicated assistant is easier because it hears the question automatically, already knows your resume and keeps its window off the screen share.
